CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The wand room.

A place that I had only just heard of and now had become the focus of my mind. I lay awake that night, thinking about what Gage and Brax had told me. The wand room was where all magical employees were required to keep their wands, athames, and the like during working hours to avoid the tools landing in the hands of the inmates. It was a secret place that hardly anyone knew the location of, and could only be opened with a mundane key.

One of the people who knew where it had been moved to? The Associate Warden. Rowan. I was their chance of finding out the location of the wand room.

What would happen if we managed to get the key? Would we all escape, or would we get caught? How would we escape, anyways? Magic was powerful, but bullets worked just as well when it came to combat.

I shivered. I was getting ahead of myself. The first thing I had to do was get some more alone time with Rowan, which shouldn't be too hard, then find out where the wand room is. How could I ask him without seeming totally obvious?

I tossed and turned, trying to quiet my brain so I could get some sleep. I had no idea what time it was, but I was sure Daisy was going to show up any minute and do the morning roll call.

If I was going to survive the day, I needed to get some shut-eye. No one was brave enough to nap in the common areas, not even Brax or Gage. Apparently, the guards had nasty tricks they liked to play on inmates who nodded off. My imagination could only think of the worst.

Just as I had finally fallen asleep, I heard a banging down the hall. It wasn't Daisy. It was someone or something else. The banging was fast and sporadic, like an animal or something.

I forced myself out of bed and crawled to the doorway to listen. Two women were fighting about something. More knocking and banging. All of the lights turned on, and the mechanical doors whirred open.

I peeked out, finding everyone's doors open and two women in the middle of the hall, beating the shit out of one another.

The lights flickered.

Daisy appeared, wielding a flashlight and a pistol. "What's going on here?" She punched a button by the door, and an alarm rang out.

Code Yellow! Code Yellow! Inmate assault in progress. A recorded voice blasted through the speakers.

I huddled inside my room, covering my ears to protect them from the blaring alarm.

Suddenly, three more guards appeared with guns drawn. "What's going on here?"

"Attempting escape?"

"Fight!"

"The doors just opened on their own."

"Who started this?"

There was so much noise and voices that I couldn't keep track of who was doing what. I watched people run past my door. Guards wrestled with the fighting inmates. The alarm quieted down, and the mechanical locks snapped shut again.

Suddenly, I was alone in relative silence again. The only thing I could hear was the muffled sounds of fighting in the hall.
